Situated on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Woolgoolga is a coastal town on the Pacific Highway. Traditionally a hotspot for the growth of bananas, in recent years several major banana plantations have been replaced with blueberries, marking a shift in the town’s exports. Woolgoolga has two beautiful beaches, Woolgoolga Back Beach and Hearnes Lake beach, both of which feature stunning Pacific seafronts. The climate in the town complements its coastal location, being temperate – the beaches often enjoy sunny weather, making Woolgoolga a popular tourist destination. Woolgoolga has the privilege of being the home of Australia’s largest Sikh population, with 13% of the 5200-strong population identifying as practicing Sikhs; the town also features two Gurdwaras.
The town was first officially gazetted in 1888 under the name ‘Woogoolga’, a corruption of ‘Wiilgulga’, a term used by the Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal people to describe the region – a name which would later be altered slightly in 1966 to its current form.
