Werribee is a suburb in outer Melbourne, Victoria. Situated on the Werribee river, it is the largest municipality in the City of Wyndham local government area by population. Settlement of Werribee began in the 1850s, with the region initially being known as Wyndham, and a post office opening in 1858. The name of the post office, and subsequently the town surrounding it, was amended to Werribee in 1884 as the town began to grow, Steady growth in the area was ensured by Werribee station, a stop along a major line running through central Melbourne. By the 1990s, the area had begun to become heavily urbanised, Werribee is well serviced by a number of educational institutions, ranging from primary schools to university campuses, as well as parks, hospitals and more.
The name Werribee shares with the river on which it sits is derived from an aboriginal word for ‘backbone’, and indeed the region lives up to this moniker, serving as a major supporting pillar within the local infrastructure. Werribee is a well-connected suburb, a centre of commerce and local government, being the administrative centre of its Local Government Area. Werribee has a strong culture of cycling, and as such is riddled with cycling lanes to permit this. Connected to the Melbourne metropolitan network by two major railway stations and situated along the Princes Highway, Werribee is a picturesque suburb wit good connections and a rich and unique character.
