Eggs and Bacon Bay is an area of the coast of southern Tasmania, around 1.4 square kilometres in size. With a population of just over 100 people, the most prominent feature of the region is Eggs and Bacon Bay beach, a beautiful beach with good facilities and a low hazard rating. The origins of the somewhat atypical name are a subject of debate, with one possible (but probably false) story claiming that the wife of an 18th century governor, Lady Jane Franklin, once ate eggs and bacon there. The more likely etymology, however, lies in the beautiful red-and-yellow flowers - which share the name ‘eggs-and-bacon’ with the bay itself - that grow throughout the area.
Eggs and Bacon Bay is only just over 40 kilometres from the state capital of Tasmania, Hobart, but is within the administrative region of Buckingham, being governed by the Huon Valley council.
Eggs and Bacon Bay has a median house price of around $380,000 AUD, which is significantly lower than the average in Tasmania of roughly $470,000 AUD.
