Colo Vale, a village in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, is a rural village found around 100km west of Sydney. With a population of just over 1,600, it is moderately sized, large enough to be well-furnished with educational and commercial facilities but not so large as to detract from the tranquil atmosphere provided by its wooded countryside locale. The village begin to develop in the 1860s, growing around a station on the Main Southern Railway. The growth was driven by the fertile soil found in the area due to decomposing volcanic rock, and indeed the word ‘Colo’ found in the name of the place is believed to be a word in the language of the indigenous aboriginal people for a volcanic hill.
The small population and the verdant landscapes that surround Colo Vale make for a tranquil, rural way of life, with much of the work in the town centred around agriculture. Within the village there is a school, along with good facilities for sports and recreation, along with a large plant nursery for native plants and a train station. Despite being a rural town, Colo Vale is only 5km from the Hume Highway, providing an excellent connection to Sydney by road, making it a relaxed but not inconveniently remote place to own property.
