If you’ve got the money and imagination, here’s a one-of-a-kind property to consider!

A former cyclone evacuation shelter is for sale near Townsville and could be yours for under $800,000.

Around this time last year realestate.com.au featured the former school and evacuation shelter in an article titled “Evacuate to this converted school, cyclone shelter in North Qld.”

However, one year later the property still hasn’t sold, and retains its asking price of $799,000. For someone looking for an unusual property offering plenty of potential, this could be one worth inspecting.

According to the article, the Majors Creek State School opened on the site in 1933, but enrolments fell to just 11 students and in 1999 the school was “mothballed”, eventually closing in 2009.

The main structure was designed as a cyclone shelter, and has since been converted into a 3 bedroom home with a “giant” main bedroom.

Raine & Horne Townsville says in the listing that the property could become a retreat/recovery centre, an Airbnb, function venue and more.

“The best part is that, due to the various possibilities, any improvements can be made in stages,” says listing agent Sonia Ross.

54 Majors Creek Road, Majors Creek, is set on 1.31 hectares and includes four residences, a new open-air horse shelter, a cricket pitch, a half basketball court, a tennis court, multiple covered entertaining areas, a giant fully-fenced and covered chook pen, a bird aviary, rainwater tanks, solar panels, and canteen facilities.

The Majors Creek property is not far from the DriveIT NQ Motorsport and Driver Education Facility, in nearby Calcium, which opened in May 2023, and has a 2.7 km racing circuit and is planned to include three further phases of development as funding allows, adding in two new circuit extensions and a dirt speedway oval course.
